Ride It Out At ClubMX

Right here in Chesterfield County, a massive training and practice facility.

Get ready for the ride of your life at ClubMX Training Facility in Chesterfield. Since 2010, the massive training and public practice facility has been a field day for motocross riders of all ages and skill levels.

“We host riders from all over the world that come in and train from beginner level to professional,” says Ben Graves, GM and riding coach at ClubMX. “And then we also have a public practice facility as well that we open up on select weekends for the general public to just come out and ride.”

Graves says the team at ClubMX works with all levels of riders, from as young as 10 years old through riders in their twenties or thirties racing professionally. Ranging from full-time to short-time, the training programs are impressive, complete with customized riding, fitness and nutrition coaching, physical therapy, a mobile app synced with training and heart rate data, and meal programs. ClubMX also offers two-day training camps on the weekend, and Graves is available for private training.

“It all depends on their level,” says Graves. “Some riders are just here to learn better skills and different riding techniques, body position on the bike, things like that. Then there are more advanced racers here to train for their racing events, so we simulate things that they would experience at a race to get them prepared.”

Additional amenities include lodging and RV sites, a clubhouse, pro shop, race shop, fitness center, and other recreational outlets, like wakeboarding, fishing and basketball. And, of course, the layout of seven tracks at ClubMX is beyond impressive:

*Pro national-caliber front track: Designed with a blend of sand and clay throughout every type of obstacle to mimic pro-national tracks; designs change several times throughout the year.

*The sand track: Rough and rutted, this long, GP-style back track is known to be one of the roughest, most physically demanding tracks in the nation.

*Practice track: This track is designed for all levels of riders, located across the road from the training facility on the side of a hill. The open practice schedule is Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but it’s recommended to check Facebook or Instagram for weekly updates.

*Corner & figure 8: These make up the various corner tracks around the property that are redesigned to work on different techniques.

*Top supercross track: The soft red sand/clay mix of this track is designed to give high speed to prepare for the eastern series.

*Bottom supercross track: Built with hard clay, this is the total opposite of the top supercross track and has a tighter, more technical layout to mimic western rounds.

*Arenacross track: This is a pro-spec track of the AMA Pro Arenacross series.

“We’ve had several riders that race for professional teams that train here at our facility,” says Graves. “There’s Zach Osborne and Shane McElrath as well. Shane was a Carolina kid and now races on a professional team.”

Graves started racing in 1986, and still rides and competes today. He studied mechanical engineering technology at Purdue University and held an AMA pro license from 1998-2006.

Originally from Indiana, he lived in Minnesota with his wife, Jolene, before moving to South Carolina. His brother-in-law, Brandon Haas, is the founding president and head coach at Club MX. Haas started racing at age 12 and went on to earn top 5 finishes at Loretta Lynn’s, championships at amateur nationals, top 25 finishes at pro nationals, and top 5 finishes at professional arenacross events. Today, he’s one of the top trainers in the world, a nationally recognized certified personal fitness trainer and still races in his spare time.
