Body Parts

“…a rather large older looking building that had a sign on it that read ‘Body Parts’.”

By Millie The Accidental Cook

As a young child, one of many, on our family trips to our aunt’s home some forty miles away, we would pass this one building that always was – well spooky.  The mere sight of it produced goosebumps on me. It was a rather large older looking building that had a sign on it that read ‘Body Parts’.

I grew up in a time period when children were seen and not heard.  I was an avid reader of almost anything I came upon that was printed.  I had a vivid imagination and given all of that, that building and that sign caused me to cringe each time we passed it.

Had I asked, there would have been at least five more people that would have gotten their laugh for the day and story for the years from my question. I would sit silently wondering, what kind of body parts were in that building.  In my mind I would dream up stories as to how or what they had done to get those parts and I would cringe.

Years passed and as our family would draw near to that building, on our trips to see our aunt, I would turn my head not wanting to see that sign, not wanting to dredge up the stories, the memories, the goosebumps that that building and that sign had produced in me.

I grew up and married and the sign on the building on the side of the road took its place in my memory bank.  In recent years, on a trip with my Mister, I was looking out of my window as we traveled along and there on the same building was the same sign.  I smiled as I read the rest of the sign.  It read ‘Salvage Parts’… used automobile parts.

Wondering why body parts are on my mind this morning, well, first of all I have never seen so many body parts.  I like to see pretty automobiles, especially the classics. That is, I like to see the outside of them, all shiny and clean.  I really don’t like to see the mechanical parts of the automobiles, the parts that make the outside function. It is like seeing your liver, your heart and the inside of your human body, your intestines. Your… well you get the picture. Like the pretty automobile’s functioning parts, they look best when covered.

Speaking of body parts, let’s prepare a lunch using some body parts, chicken parts.

ANOTHER RECIPE BY MILLIE

MILLIE’S VERSION – CHICKEN SALAD

  • 4 large chicken breasts
  • 4 chick thighs
  • 2 tablespoons (heaping) Miracle Whip
  • 2 tablespoons of Bread and Butter sweet pickle vinegar
  • 1 16oz can of crushed pineapple with juice

Wash the chicken parts and place them in a large container.  Add enough water to almost cover the chicken.  Boil it until its tender then allow it to cool.

Remove the skin, debone, and cut any remaining fat from the chicken and discard.  Chop the remaining chicken into bite-size pieces. Place into a container for mixing.  Blend 2 tablespoons of Miracle Whip, 2 tablespoons sweet pickle vinegar, and one can of crushed pineapple with juice together, then blend this with the chicken. Add salt according to your taste.  When used with the other salads this recipe serves 12 or more.

Serve it on a bed of lettuce and have your croissant rolls handy.  This is really tasty and so pleasing to the eye.  I usually serve along with homemade potato salad, pasta salad and a side of baked beans.
