Funny Guy Aziz Ansari has Roots in Bennettsville

By Ashley Daniels

Before his days on the hit NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” Aziz Ansari may have roamed around the many parks and recreational areas here in Bennettsville as a kid.

Born in Columbia in February 1983 to south Indian immigrants, Ansari grew up in Bennettsville, where he attended the private Marlboro Academy and the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville.

While Ansari spread his wings outside of the Carolinas for a career in acting, as a comedian, writer, director and producer, his parents still call South Carolina home. His father, Shoukath, is a gastroenterologist affiliated with FirstHealth of the Carolinas and his mother, Fatima is an obstetrician and gynecologist, as well as manages Shoukath’s offices spread across the Carolinas.
