It’s A Whiz!

“It was similar to the slushy drinks of today”

By Millie The Accidental Cook

Wow does that word bring back memories? Remember when you could stop by Mr. Jack’s on the corner in Cheraw and enjoy one of his WHIZ flavors he was famous for… at least locally. It was similar to the slushy drinks of today.

Mr. Jack’s Whiz drinks were always made from scratch with the fresh fruit except for maybe the vanilla one. Oh did they hit the spot especially during those hot days of summer. If you took your time and allowed them to melt a little you could prolong the joy. Of course, you had to start slowly because they were so cold you might think that your brain had frozen.

Lately, I have been thinking about these and some of the sandwiches that Mr. Jack made and so I have been experimenting. Some of my family members and friends used to help him at times and so I often tried to duplicate them at home. Unfortunately, there aren’t any of them around anymore so I am on my own.

Since I’m always sharing a recipe, I thought I’d share my version of the Whiz with you. I don’t ever remember him making this kind before and of course, it would never be as good as his was but we are enjoying it.

One thing more… your whiz or whatever you are preparing will only be as good and tasty as the ingredients you use. Also, you will need a really good blender (mine is one of those $19 kind and needless to say, does not crush ice very well). There was the time that I had this nice, really nice blender that sat on the counter as much as for the beauty of it as for the convenience of it being handy when I needed it. For the life of me, I simply cannot find it. I know when my body is laid to rest and my dear family starts going through my possessions my family will say “well, look there she did have a blender… but what is it doing in here.. bless her heart!” Just for the record, I will no longer be able to hear them.

I want to share with you my version of the Peach Whiz. You will need to have really soft, sweet, fresh peaches. When I first tried this my peaches were too sour, not sweet at all. The following will make a 6oz cup. You can adjust the recipe to suit the needs of your crowd. I hope to share more flavors later.

ANOTHER RECIPE BY MILLIE

MILLIE’S PEACH WHIZ

  • 1 tablespoon of water
  • 1 cup of crushed ice
  • 1 medium size fresh peach
  • 1 packet of Sweet & Low or sugar

Place crushed ice in blender, peel and cut a fresh peach, add 1 packet sweet & low and water. Blend to liquefy until ingredients are smooth. Pour into your glass, grab a straw and enjoy!

Those tiny bits of the peach are a delightful surprise. It’s so simple but it is simply good! Play around with this it is both fun and tasty.

You may want it sweeter – just add more Sweet & Low. I also added some cinnamon to one and enjoyed it thoroughly. You don’t even have to worry about the weight thing… like I said, you will need a really good blender.
