Sam Hood: Street Racer
Southeast Street Outlaws
By Alexandria Swain
Who is Sam Hood? He’s a family man, a traveler, a friend to name just a few things. Quite possibly the coolest thing about Sam Hood? He’s a street racer. Not only that, but he is a part of Season 2 of Street Outlaws: Fastest In America. It’s airing right now! His episode for South Carolina just aired Monday, November 30. The show airs on the Discovery Channel, so if you aren’t familiar you can definitely check that show out. It’s fast, fun, and strategic. It definitely takes skill.
Sam was born and raised in Marlboro County, South Carolina. “I’ve been racing ever since I could drive pretty much.”, said Hood. He got on Street Outlaws through going to an open invitation of try-outs for the South Carolina team. “I never really thought about being on TV, but when the opportunity came I took it.”, said Hood. He had to race the current teams in order to advance and be on the show. Clearly, he did the job. The teams and the crew filmed for 2 weeks in Wyoming. There were about 10 cars total on his team, Southeast Street Outlaws. They go to secret streets and have their races in undisclosed areas. “We’re just told when and where to show up.”, said Hood.
Street racing is a family affair for the Hoods. “My wife is very forgiving. She likes to come.”, said Hood with a chuckle. Sometimes his son and daughter, who are twins, come along too. His son races as well following his dad’s footsteps. “If the car moves, he’s in it.”, said Hood. He wants to hopefully pass the baton onto his son. “Learning as we go driving is one thing,” said Hood, “But knowing what you’re doing is part of the game. It’s a family bonding thing for the Hoods. They’ve got 5 shop cars, all different, but all Mustangs. Some have Ford, Chevrolet, Nitro, and other types of engines. Hood built the cars, so they are his dream cars. They are like his babies outside of his actual ones. Hood, and a lot of the time his family, travel at least twice a month. This weekend they are going to Rockingham, North Carolina where Hood will race in the Dig or Die Race. There will be 130 cars! Just last year in 2019, there were about 4,000 or more spectators. Talk about a show!
Hood plans on continuing to race, promote himself and his team and still guide his son in the near future. “I was humbled to be on TV. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I hope to do it again.” said Hood. “Either way, we’re still going to race.”, said Hood.
