tips on pond stocking
Hardly a trip can be made in our neck of the woods without seeing a pond… they are a plenty.
French painter, Claude Monet, said “All of a sudden I had the revelation of how enchanting my pond was”. I agree, ponds are mesmerizing and full of life.
A lot of good times are had around a pond and many stories told… some true, some not so, and most usually wrapped around fishing.
Ponds have purpose as well.. from aquaculture, irrigation, stormwater capture, and like most in our area, for recreational enjoyment. Whether enjoying a dip in the cool waters, navigating the edges in a kayak, or getting into some line tugging action.. it won’t be long and many will meander to their favorite, often secretive fishing spot.
There is a strategy to crafting a pond that performs.. the perfect blend of healthy habitat and right mixture of fish.

To prepare for springtime fish stocking, now is ideal to “lime” your ponds, it’ll help keep the ph balance in check.
For stocking, usually spring or fall is best, the water temps are mild and oxygen levels are higher.
As a general rule, you’ll want to stock two to three types of prey fish to supply the predator fish. For example if your predator fish is bass, consider stocking prey such as bluegill or redbreast, other feed fish such as the “mosquitofish” are a great way to ensure the bottom of the food chain is kept in balance + they’ll help control mosquitos.
To help control vegetation growth, consider introducing sterile grass carp, generally 15 or so per acre will go a long way of ridding your pond of problems weeds.
